What is the difference between a jacket and a coat?
A coat tends to be a heavier weight jacket and can often be longer in length. Coats are often worn smarter or more formally, for example could be worn in colder months with a dress pant and button up smart shirt instead of a suit jacket or blazer. A jacket is more light weight and could be classified as a more casual or smart casual option, examples of this are a denim jacket or a bomber jacket which is commonly worn casually but could be dressed up to be worn smart casual depending on the outfit. Lighter weight jackets are great for transeasonal wear.
How should a jacket fit?
A jacket should fit differently depending on if it is a fitted, regular or oversized fit. However, there are some general rules to follow to find the perfect fit jacket.
The Hug Test - Give yourself a big hug reaching for the shoulder blades of your opposite arm. If it feels too tight in the elbows or shoulders, try the next size up.
The Arms Stretched Out Front Test - If your reach out front and your wrists become exposed, you may need to size up.
The Shoulder Seam Check - Check if the shoulder seams line up with your shoulders.
Which type of jacket is warmest?
A jacket made up of a wool blend will keep you warm throughout the colder seasons. Lightweight yet durable, a wool blend has air pockets throughout which provides natural insulation to coats and jackets. Wool is also water-resistant, which makes it an ideal material to keep you warm and dry during winter.
